Krause, Cowins pace Mitchell at Class AA meet meet
RAPID CITY — The Mitchell Kernel cross country teams improved from last season’s performance at the Class AA state meet Saturday in Rapid City.
“It is definitely an improvement from last year when we didn’t beat anybody,” Mitchell coach Scott Munsen said.
The Kernel boys beat one school, while the girls were able to finish ahead of two in the meet held at Robbinsdale Park. Both teams finished last at the state meet last year.

The boys’ team finished 16th out of 17 schools and was led by Riley Cowins.
Cowins finished 43rd with a time of 17 minutes, 49.10 seconds in the 5K race.
Addison Dehaven of Brookings took first in the race with a time of 15:34.30, while Will Lauer of Sioux Falls Lincoln took second in 16:00.10.
The Sioux Falls Lincoln boys earned first as a team for the second year in a row with 32 points. Sioux Falls Roosevelt took second with 92 points.
The Mitchell girls finished 15th as a team, were led by Mary Krause, who finished with a time of 16:17.16, good for 37th place.
“The exciting thing is that we have all of our girls coming back next year and we have four sophomore and two freshmen back on the boy’s side,” Munsen said as he looks forward to the future for Mitchell cross country.
Rapid City Stevens took first place as a team for the girls in the 4K race with 58 points, topping second-place Rapid City Central, which finished with 99.
Annie Kruse of Yankton took the individual crown for the girls, finishing with a time of 14:03.31.
