Kernels win home opener
Kernel fans had lots to cheer about in Mitchell’s wrestling home opener Thursday.
Mitchell recorded six pins and defeated Chamberlain 63-18 in a Class A wrestling dual.
“Anytime you step on the mat, you want to be aggressive and want to be the person forcing the action. We don’t always do that but tonight, we did,” Mitchell head coach Travis Carpenter said. “I’m proud of the kids.”
The dual was highlighted by junior Matt Larson’s 9-second pin at 170 pounds. Larson was 4 seconds off the school and state quick-pin record, which is held by Adam Everson with a 5-second pin at a regional tournament.
Briggs Havlik (126), Ethan Parr (145), Alex Herrick (152), Tyson Sprinkel (220) and Chase Klingaman (285) also earned pins for the Kernels.
“I didn’t think it was going to be quite as lopsided, but our kids wrestled well and did some good things,” Carpenter said.
Chamberlain’s lone wrestler was seventh-grader Collin Powell with a win by fall over Silas Lopez at 106.
The only match that went the distance was at 132 pounds. Mitchell’s Trey Hohn defeated Jim Bob Ellsworth 4-2. There were six open weight classes in the dual.
“We’re a little rusty,” Chamberlain head coach John Donovan said. “One thing we’ve done over the course of the season is we’ve really improved our shape. We’ve just got to get to the third period to be able to take advantage of that.”
The Kernels turn around to face Harrisburg and Yankton in an Eastern South Dakota Conference triangular at 5 p.m. today in Yankton. Carpenter said he’s using the three duals to get ready for the coming schedule.
“We have all these big tournaments going forward, so we’re using these duals to springboard us into the toughest part of our schedule,” said Carpenter, whose team beat Yankton in a dual earlier this season.”
Chamberlain is back in action Saturday at the Brandon Valley Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday in Brandon.
