SIOUX FALLS -- First-year Mitchell High School girls' soccer coach Kayla Braffet couldn't have been more proud of her backline Saturday.

The backline -- including defenders Taina Youngstrom, Morgan Hines, Bailey Hohn and Sara VanErdewyk -- did not allow a goal en route to a 0-0 finish against Sioux Falls Christian in the season opener Saturday.

Defensive midfielder Katie Stern also chipped in to hold SFC at bay.

"We played really well," Braffet said. "We missed a lot of opportunities, but I am really happy with how well the girls played as a team. Our defense was super strong. They were supporting each other and we had strong communication in the back."

The Mitchell defense only allowed two Sioux Falls Christian shots to reach goalie Kristin Pistulka in the game. In contrast, the Kernels took 25 shots but were unable to net one.

"I think the girls saw the game pace, how fast the game is going to be and what tempo we need to be practicing at," Braffet said. "The game also opened our eyes to what we are strong at and what still needs to be developed as we go forward."

Mitchell looks to get its first win of the season in the home opener at 8 p.m. Tuesday against Tea Area at the Mitchell Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex. The junior varsity game begins at 6 p.m.
