Kernels take fifth, Larson wins first title at West Central Invite
HARTFORD — Mitchell junior Matt Larson went down early in the 160-pound championship match at the West Central Invitational Saturday. But he didn’t panic, and battled back to force overtime, where he beat Sioux Falls Washington’s Luke Reiter with a two-point take down to claim the 160-pound title.
It was the first title of the season for Larson and the only Kernels’ individual championship at the Invitational.
“It was a gutsy performance by Matt,” Mitchell wrestling coach Travis Carpenter said. “He pushed the action in overtime and went out there and got the take down. I am proud of the effort he gave.”
The Kernels finished fifth at the tournament with 145 points. Aberdeen Central scored 273.5 to finish first.
Seven Mitchell wrestlers ended their tournament with top-5 finishes at the meet. Preston Skinner (182) and Tyson Sprinkel (195) finished second, Landon Neugebauer (138) took third, Alex Herrick (152) finished fourth and Briggs Havlik (126), Ethan Parr (145) and Chase Klingaman (220) took fifth.
“I am happy about the whole team’s performance,” Carpenter said. “You can always look back and find a match that you could win, but as a group they are starting to come together. They are starting to put things together and over the next month I am excited to see where things go.”
Mitchell’s next action is a triangular Friday in Brookings.
