Kernels record lowest score of season
Junior Jacob Rice won his first high school boys' golf meet of the season Tuesday at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.
Rice shot a 35 on both the front and back nine for a 70, which is 2-under par. Rice edged Yankton's Jace Guthmiller, who had a 71, for the win. Guthmiller finished in a tie for eighth at last year's Class AA state tournament.
"He was so consistent," Mitchell co-head coach Rob Marchand said of Rice. "Guthmiller is a good golfer, and Jacob isn't afraid of that and takes the challenge."
The Kernels also scored their lowest score of the season by 13 strokes. Mitchell's top four golfers -- Rice, Jaron Weich, Cade Carpenter and Landon Pooley -- totaled a team score of 310. The Kernels' low score prior to Tuesday was at the Pierre Invitational where Mitchell shot a 323.
Weich shot a 75, Carpenter shot a 79 and Pooley finished with an 86.
Marchand said his team was relaxed on its home course.
"When you go on the road, you're not really familiar with those courses," he said. "We're very comfortable at home and that released a lot of stress. We're not going to play this well every time we play in Mitchell but we do play better. ... It was an exceptional day."
Marchand said his golfers are playing well at this point in the season and he is happy with what he's seeing.
Yankton, which finished third at state last season, finished with a 295 Tuesday.
"We played against a top-tier team," Marchand said. "(Yankton) is very, very good. For our guys to shoot a score like we did today against a good team is great."
The Kernels are back in action Friday when they travel to Brookings. The quadrangular begins at 1 p.m.
