Kernels to play at Yankton Thursday in first round of playoffs
The Mitchell High School football team opens its playoff run Thursday night at Yankton.
Earning the sixth seed in the 11AA playoffs, the Kernels are scheduled to kick off with the Bucks, seeded third, at 7 p.m. Thursday at Crane-Youngworth Field in Yankton.
Mitchell (3-5) ended its regular season Thursday night with a 28-21 loss to Eastern South Dakota Conference rival Huron at Joe Quintal Field in Mitchell. That put the Kernels on a four-game losing streak headed into the playoffs.
Although Mitchell has to travel in its first-round playoff game, it has already had success in Yankton this year. The Kernels opened their season with a 27-21 win over Yankton on the road. The Bucks ended their season 4-4.
