The team title went to Watertown with a score of 190, narrowly beating the 189 posted by Rapid City Central.

“It was one of those tournaments where Watertown got on a roll and came out of nowhere to win it,” Mitchell coach Travis Carpenter said.

The Kernels’ top placer was Ethan Parr, who took second at 145 pounds. Parr won his first two matches by pin fall, before losing a 5-1 decision to Yankton’s Casey Skillingstad in the finals.

Three Kernels took third, including Alex Herrick, Preston Skinner and Chase Klingaman.

“We Wrestled well overall, taking 10 kids and placing nine of them,” Carpenter said.

After splitting his first two matches in the 152-pound weight class, Herrrick won his third-place bout with a 7-1 decision over Watertown’s Dylan Mitzel.

Skinner, wrestling at 182 pounds, pinned Sioux Falls Washington’s Caleb York at 3 minutes, 33 seconds for third place.

Chase Klingaman also picked up a pin fall in his third-place match, defeating Watertown’s Cole Jurgens at 2:12 for the win.

“Chase hadn’t been in our lineup until this year, and as a senior he is wrestling really well for us,” Carpenter said.

The Kernels are off until a dual with Aberdeen Central on Jan. 2 in Aberdeen.
