Pat Moller’s girls’ tennis team is fighting injuries.

Tatum Dean and Jaeden Lizakowski stepped in to play varsity singles and doubles slots Monday when Mitchell hosted Sioux Falls Roosevelt at Hitchcock Park.

“Both of them did what they were supposed to do,” said Moller, whose team fell to the Rough Riders 6-3 in the dual.

Dean filled in for Kendra Hanks, who is battling an ankle injury, at the Flight 6 singles spot, while Lizakowski played at Flight 3 doubles with Sammy Pooley. Dean also filled in at Flight 1 doubles for Grace Grabenstein. Grabenstein played her singles match, but Moller rested her during doubles to deal with back problems.

“I’m really looking forward to playing our first match where everybody is healthy,” Moller said.

The Kernels (4-7, 2-5 ESD) earned two singles wins from Pooley at Flight 4 and Allison Buckley at Flight 5.

“(Allison) has great control with locating the ball and has been working on volleys and it’s paying off,” Moller said.

Mitchell also earned a win at Flight 3 doubles from Pooley and Lizakowski. With the singles win, Pooley improved to 10-1 on the season.

The Kernels host two triangulars this week, beginning with Yankton and Sioux Falls Lincoln today. The match begins at 1 p.m. at Hitchcock Park. The Kernels also host the Gazelles and Spearfish at noon Saturday.

“It’s exciting that we’re home for homecoming week and hopefully we can continue to improve,” Moller said. “We’re definitely playing better tennis now than we were at the beginning of the season.”
