Kernels fall to Bobcats on senior night
The Mitchell Kernel volleyball team ended its regular season with a loss in four sets to Eastern South Dakota Conference foe Brookings Tuesday at the Mitchell High School.
Set scores were 16-25, 25-14, 25-16, 25-22.
Mitchell volleyball coach Deb Thill said her team got off to a hot start but ran into some trouble as the match continued.
“We started off the match very well,” Thill said. “We did a really nice job of passing, serving and hitting to start the match, but we started set two with bad setting and hitting errors.”
The Kernels (9-11, 7-9 ESD) finished the game with 19 hitting errors and 11 missed serves.
“Brookings defense played better than we did. Their offense played better and we had too many unforced errors to win the match,” Thill said.
The Kernels were led by Taylin Alm, who recorded 22 kills.
Taylor Sebert added 25 digs, while Sidney Neugebauer had 13 digs, two kills and two aces.
Emma Schmidt had 32 assists and seven kills, Alison Murphy had five kills and Shelly Iburg had six kills and three blocks.
Prior to the game, Mitchell’s 11 seniors were honored in their last regular season game for the Kernels.
Thill added her team suffered from a lack of defensive communication, but she hopes to have that corrected in time for postseason play.
“It has been a roller coaster all season,” she said. “Now we have to start over. Everybody is zero and zero as we start the postseason, so we are going to prepare and hopefully we qualify for the state tournament.”
The Class AA volleyball tournament is at the Corn Palace in November.
The Kernels play in the District 3AA tournament Tuesday.
