Kernel volleyball defeats Brookings in ESD match

Alm helped Mitchell rally from an early five-point deficit in the third set to a 25-21, 25-15, 25-22 sweep of Brookings.
The Kernels pulled away from a 20-20 tie to win the first set, and dominated the second set for a 2-0 lead.
It was Brookings that led for the majority of the third as the Bobcats held a 22-19 edge, following an Alyssa Tvedt kill. But Mitchell dominated play at the net over the next six points to close out the set and match.
Alm sandwiched a pair of kills around a Bobcat hitting error — forcing Brookings to call a timeout with the scored tied at 22. Another Brookings hitting error gave the Kernels the lead, and Shelly Iburg’s kill out of the middle pushed it to match point for Mitchell.
Alm made sure there wasn’t going to be a Bobcat comeback with a kill to end it.
“We’ve been struggling a little bit lately,” said Mitchell head coach Deb Thill. “We’ve been in matches, but we haven’t been able to finish matches. We’ve been competing with teams, but we’ve had errors happen late in the match and today we decided that we were the ones that were going to be aggressive.
“We were going to swing aggressively. We were going to serve aggressively. We’re not going to make our own errors. We’re going to decide our own fate and we did. I was very proud of that effort.”
In addition to Alm’s effort, Sidney Neugebauer chipped in with eight kills and 11 digs, Iburg contributed five kills and Emma Schmidt finished with 27 assists.
Kennedy Ischen tallied four service aces, Tayler Sebert notched 13 digs and Rachel Bucholz added three blocks and three kills.
Tvedt led the Bobcats with 12 kills and two blocks, while Mack Teal had six kills and a pair of blocks. Jenna Thomas and Ally Milton finished with 16 and 10 assists, respectively, as Hannah Stuart collected 17 digs and Ashlyn Onstad 10.
On Tuesday, Mitchell (5-6) travels to Harrisburg, while the Bobcats (2-10) host Aberdeen Central.
