Kernel tennis team tops O’Gorman for first time since 1990s
SIOUX FALLS — The Mitchell boys tennis team accomplished a feat it hadn’t in nearly 20 years.
The Kernels defeated Sioux Falls O’Gorman 6-3 Tuesday at McKennan Park in Sioux Falls.
“I wouldn’t call it monumental,” Mitchell head coach Pat Moller said, adding the last time he thought the Kernels beat the Knights in a match was in 1995. “O’Gorman has a lot of trophies in the trophy case, so it is always nice to get a win over them, but we have a lot bigger goals than just winning one dual.”
The Kernels (5-0, 2-0 ESD) won four singles matches and secured the win after the No. 3 doubles team, which consists of junior Brenden Lehr and freshman Jacob Dahme, won the first doubles match of the day. Mitchell’s No. 1 doubles team — junior Jacob Cersosimo and sophomore Alex Hegg — also won its match to push the win to 6-3.
Mitchell earned singles victories from No. 2 junior Beau Brown, No. 3 Hegg, No. 4 sophomore Kanin Nelson and No. 5 Lehr.
“It is a confidence boost for us, but we lost three matches,” Moller said. “I think we could have won all three of those, so there is room for improvement.”
The Kernels continue play at a quadrangular at 9 a.m. Thursday in Huron.
