Kernel tennis team stays perfect, sweeps triangular

HURON — The Kernel boys tennis team is taking care of business early in the season.

Mitchell swept Huron and Rapid City Central Thursday for the second time this year, improving to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Eastern South Dakota Conference.

“I’m happy with where we’re at, but we don’t want to get complacent,” Mitchell coach Pat Moller said.

Mitchell’s No. 2 junior Beau Brown, No. 3 sophomore Alex Hegg, No. 4 sophomore Kanin Nelson and No. 5 junior Brenden Lehr are all undefeated in singles after seven matches this season. The No. 1 doubles — junior Jacob Cersosimo and Hegg — and No. 3 doubles — Lehr and freshman Jacob Dahme — teams are also undefeated two weeks into the season.

During Thursday’s triangular, Moller had two different players — Dahme and sophomore Gray Determan — play a No. 6 singles match. He said the two will play challenge matches against each other next week to determine who will have the spot for the remainder of the year.

The Kernels have a week off before hosting their home opener as Mitchell plays two new opponents — Madison and Vermillion — and Huron for the third time this season. The quadrangular begins at 10 a.m. April 25 at Hitchcock Park in Mitchell.
