Kernel girls rank sixth in ESD All Sports Award
Mitchell High School girls athletics took sixth and the boys finished ninth in the Eastern South Dakota Conference for All Sports Awards for the 2013-14 school year.
The Kernel girls finished with 45 points in the rankings, while the boys totaled 23 points. Brandon Valley won both the boys and girls All Sports Awards, which have been given by the league for 28 years, for the school year. This is the second award for the Lynx boys (2011-12) and first for the girls. An ESD All Sports Champion plaque is presented to each first-place school in each division.
Points are awarded in reverse order of the place in seven boys sports of basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, track and field and wrestling, and nine girls sports of basketball, competitive cheer, cross country, competitive dance, golf, gymnastics, tennis, track and field and volleyball. Nine points are awarded to teams that win a title, eight points are given to second-place finishes and points continue decreasing by one through ninth place.
The Kernels took home three conference title this season, including boys tennis, girls basketball and gymnastics. The Mitchell tennis and basketball teams went on to have runner-up finishes at state, while the gymnastics team was the lone Kernel program to win a state championship this season.
"Anytime you can claim three titles with nine schools in the mix, it's a nice recognition," Mitchell Activities Director Geoff Gross said. "We've got some great athletes that have come through the girls ranks who are going to compete in college at all levels. Hopefully, they've gained a couple of things from our athletics.
"Win or lose, we're hopeful for providing lessons that the classroom can't provide to all of our athletes."
The Kernels have won the All Sports Award five times for girls and zero times for boys.
