After taking a slim one-point lead into halftime, the Kernels (16-1, 13-0 ESD) outscored the Tigers (4-12, 3-9 ESD) 24-6 in the third quarter to pull away for the 73-48 win Tuesday at the Huron Arena.

“Winning the ESD is tough, and it’s not something that happens everyday,” Mitchell coach Wes Morgan said. “No matter where you play in this league, it is tough to go on the road and get a win.”

The Kernel defense held Huron to just 14 points in the second half. The Tigers shot 17 percent after halftime, following a 62-percent performance before the break.

“We came out in the second half and played really tough defense and didn’t let them get as many second looks,” Mitchell junior forward Taylor Volesky said.

Mitchell’s Macy Miller continued her recent scoring outburst, finishing with 41 points for her third game of more than 40 in the last four for the Kernels.

“Macy played in the flow of the game, taking the ball to the basket,” Morgan said.

The South Dakota State University signee shot 14-of-21 from the field and 13-of-15 from the free-throw line in the win. She also had team highs with six rebounds, three assists and seven steals. Miller set the school’s single-season scoring record, surpassing her own mark of 493 set last season. Miller, who is the first Kernel girl to score more than 500 points, now has 516 on the season.

Morgan praised the play of Volesky, who scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Kernels.

“Coach putting the pressure on me to start strong tonight just gave me a lot of confidence,” Volesky said.

Senior Torrie Michels added six points for Mitchell, while seniors Emma Schmidt and Shelly Iburg added five and four points, respectively.

“We have to get Taylor and some of the other girls going so teams can’t key on Macy all the time,” Morgan said.

Mitchell shot 25-of-53 from the field for 47 percent and 21-of-29 from the free-throw line. The Kernels had just five turnovers and forced 20 Tiger turnovers.

Huron outrebounded Mitchell 35-30.

Sarah Carr led Huron with 15 points, while Taya Butterfield added 13 off the bench for the Tigers, which shot 14-of-44 in the game.

“In the first half, we didn’t turn the ball over and our shots were going in the hole for us, “ Huron coach Allen Steffen said. “When you have a half like that, you don’t want to go into the locker room. We came out in the second half and turned the ball over and they took advantage.”

The Kernels play against Brandon Valley Tuesday in Brandon, while Huron plays Brandon Valley Saturday in Brandon.
