Kernel wrestlers place fourth at Watertown
WATERTOWN — The Mitchell High School wrestling team went 2-2 in duals and finished fourth at the Watertown invitational dual tournament Saturday in Watertown.
After falling in their first match to Watertown 39-23, the Kernels topped Milbank 57-24. Mitchell won all of the matches that it competed in, as the team has four open flights.
Mitchell topped Yankton 47-30, before falling to Pierre 40-22 in the third place match. Against Pierre, the Kernels won six of the 10 matches in which they competed.
Pierre topped Mitchell in a dual meet Friday 48-25.
“We wrestled very well with being down four weight classes,” Mitchell coach Travis Carpenter said. “To go down 24 points before you start a match and to compete with these teams is good.”
Alex Herrick won all five of his matches in the 152-pound weight class, while Matt Larson and Tyson Sprinkel also went 5-0 at 160 and 195, respectively.
Ethan Parr, Trey Hohn and Robert McCardle each finished the day with one loss for the Kernels.
Aberdeen won the event, knocking off host Watertown in the finals 43-32.
The Kernels will be in Rapid City for a tournament at 9 a.m. Friday.
