John E. "Jack" Veldheer

John E "Jack" Veldheer, 82, of Mitchell, SD went to be with his Lord and Savior at home with family, Wednesday, July 16, 2014. Funeral services will be at 1:30 PM, Monday July 21st at the First Reformed Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 2-4:00 PM Sunday with a Prayer Service at 2:30 PM at the First Reformed Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Jack was born to John and Jeannette (Vant Haaff) Veldheer on January 10, 1932 at home in Academy SD. He graduated from Platte High School. On November 5, 1952 he and Arla M. Star started a 62 year love story. His last words assured her of his love.

They started married life in Toledo OH with Jack attending meat cutting trade school. He worked cutting meat in Grand Rapids MI, Pickstown SD, and Platte SD. They moved to Mitchell SD in 1958 to work for Sunbeam Bread.

1963 was the beginning of Jacks Campers, starting with selling campers out of a melon stand on Havens Avenue. The business grew so it moved to its current location on I-90.

Jacks love of the Lord was his first priority and he shared this with everyone by singing, giving and encouraging. His joy was spending time with family and friends camping, traveling, fishing, golfing and spending time wintering in Florida.

Jack was a charter member of the First Reformed Church in Mitchell, helping in any way he could for many years and served on several other boards including Lions, Gideons and Salvation Army.

Grateful to share his life are his wife, Arla; his children, Kathleen (Dan) Matthews, Brenda Veldheer, Doug (Kari) Veldheer all of Mitchell SD, John (Rita) Veldheer of Kansas City MO; twelve grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; three sisters: Joyce (Alan) Polly, Platte SD, Jane (Larry) Meirle , Spring Lake MI, Jerralynne Tjeerdsma, Sioux Falls SD; three brothers: Jim (Sandy) Veldheer, Grand Rapids MI, Buz (Dawn) Veldheer, Greer SC, Joel (Wendy) Veldheer, Grand Rapids MI; one brother-in-law, Vernon (LuVerne) Star, Corsica, SD; two sisters-in-law, Octavia Den Beste, Payson AZ and Kathy Veldheer, Grandville MI, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, two brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law and one great-granddaughter.
