John Conway, 65, Alexandria, SD died Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Monday, August 4 at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Burial with military honors will be in Servicemens Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:30 pm Sunday with a prayer service at 6:30 pm at the Bittner Funeral Chapel.
He was born October 15, 1948 in Aberdeen, SD to John and Elsie (Fratzke) Conway. He was baptized, confirmed and attended St. Pauls Lutheran Church. He was active in boy scouts and civil air patrol. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School and attended South Dakota School of Mines. He served in the US Army for three years, doing a tour in Vietnam and was promoted to the Green Berets after specialized training in classified coding. After his discharge from the Army he was employed by Spink County as a dispatcher and deputy sheriff. He later moved to Mitchell to be closer to family and was employed by the Davison County Sheriffs Office as a corrections officer until the time of his death. On August 10, 2006 he married Segunda Cadampog. He was an avid historian and spent many summers on fossil hunts and archaeological excavations with the Corps of Engineers. He enjoyed participating in coin and fossil shows throughout the Midwest.
He is survived by his wife, Segunda, one sister, Carol (Don) Radel, nephew, Steven (Connie) Harr, niece, Erin (Dave) Allen, three great nephews: Trevor, Travis and Tanner and a great niece, Kiersten and his in-laws in the Philippines.
