Jean Cudmore, 93, resident of Sioux Falls formerly Mitchell, died Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be Monday, August 18, 2014, 10:30 AM, at the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in the Mizpah Cemetery in Plankinton. Visitation will be from 5-7PM Sunday evening with a Prayer Service at 6:30 PM at the Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Jeannette Lois Cudmore was born on July 9, 1921 at the family home in Kranzburg SD to Leonard and Zelda (Mitchell) Strait. She attended schools in Kranzburg and Watertown SD graduating from the 8th grade. She then started her first job as a babysitter, and helping care for her younger siblings at home.

She married Lawrence E. Cudmore on March 4, 1939 in Watertown SD and soon after they moved to Fort Leonard Wood MO where her husband helped build the military barracks. They moved to Ypsilanti MI to work on a dairy farm, finally settling in South Dakota in 1943. They lived in several places including Watertown and the White Lake and the Wessington Springs area where they owned and operated a dairy farm for many years. They managed the Municipal Bar in Stickney before moving to Mitchell in 1965. Jean was a member of the Underwood Methodist Church in White Lake SD and the First United Methodist Church in Mitchell SD.

Jean also worked at Wesley Acres, the Elks Lodge and the SD Headstart Program in Mitchell. The family owned and operated a custom harvesting business, traveling from Texas all the way to Canada. Jean cooked, cleaned and drove grain trucks and combines for the crew. Jean and Lawrence owned Cuddy's Bar from about 1976 until their retirement in 1997. After Lawrence passed away in 1998, Jean moved from the farm south of Mitchell into town, later moving to Watertown, before settling in Sioux Falls SD to live with her daughter, Lori and her family.

Jean is survived by her six children: Larry (Joyce) Cudmore, Seward NE, Gerald (Gloria) Cudmore, Castlewood SD, Dale (Carla) Cudmore, Mitchell SD, Rodney (Darlene) Cudmore, Fort Pierre SD, Randy Cudmore, Bakersfield CA and Lori (Larry) Grovenburg, Sioux Falls SD; twelve grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; a sister, Beverly Hemp, Watertown, SD and a brother, Duane (Gerry) Strait, Webster City, IA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, her parents, two sisters: Leona and Phyllis, three brothers: Wesley, Clifford and John and three grandsons: Terry Cudmore, Dustin Durst and Marty Cudmore.
