James Clark Mountain, age 90, of Mitchell, SD passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, August 11, 2014. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, August 14, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Mitchell with burial at American Legion Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 6PM to 8PM at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service beginning at 7PM.
James C. Mountain, son of Hilma and Artemus Mountain, was born November 22, 1923 in White River, SD. At age 12, he and his family moved to LeRoy, KS. In 1943, James joined the U.S. Army and served during WWII in Normandy during D-Day. He was awarded a WWII Victory Ribbon, a Good Conduct Medal, and an EAME Theatre Ribbon with one Silver Service Star and one Bronze Arrowhead Distinguished Unit Badge before being honorably discharged on December 18, 1945. Following the service, he was united in marriage with Betty Cummings. They made their home in Mitchell and raised their two children, Larry Mountain and Karla Suelflow.
James was employed with Shopko for ten years, Mitchell High School for 28 years, and KORN for 40+ years until his retirement last year. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. James married Mary Ringel on June 12, 1999. They were avid sports fans for the past 15 years.
James is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter Karla; twin brother John; daughter-in-law Karen Mountain; ex-son-in-law Scott Suelflow; and from blended families, 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty; son, Larry Mountain; and brothers, Gordon and Paul Mountain.
