Jackrabbits win Showdown Series
SIOUX FALLS — South Dakota State University was named the winner in the South Dakota Showdown Series, which is a point-based, athletic and academic competition.
The competition is run by the South Dakota Corn Utilization officials and is between the state’s two NCAA Division I schools — SDSU and the University of South Dakota.
The Jackrabbits won the contest, which is in its second year, by a score of 18-9. SDSU won the inaugural contest last year 14-13.
“For years, this storied rivalry has captivated our state on the fields of play,” SDSU Director of Athletics Justin Sell said. “Now, the South Dakota Corn Showdown Series spotlights academic and philanthropic achievements in addition to athletics.”
The competition is structured in a point system in which each institution can earn up to 24 points based on conference championships and head-to-head competition.
The two in-state rivals compete against each other in 17 men’s and women’s sports. Each school earned three points in the contest from academic performance.
