J W Barber was born to Ben and Maggie Barber in Hydro, Oklahoma on August 24, 1930. He spent his early years in Hydro breaking horses, playing basketball and piloting his dad's plane. There are many stories of J W and Ben giving family members hair raising flights over Hydro. He served in the Oklahoma National Guard in the late forties with Battery "C", 158th Field Artillery.

J W married Barbara Anne Miller of Clinton, Oklahoma in 1950. Work took the family out to Nevada in the early 1960's where the family lived until 1984 when they moved to Modesto, Ca.

As a long haul truck driver for over 50 years, he logged millions of miles from the east and west coasts of the United States, Canada and Mexico. He could give you directions to just about anywhere in the United States from memory. He would tell you that his favorite stretch of road was along Interstate 80. He loved music and would listen to everything from country western to classical music on these long trips across country. He was also an avid reader and passed his love of books down to his children.

He retired from long haul trucking in 1997 and moved to his favorite fishing hole, Rock Springs, Wyoming.

In 2000 J W moved to Mitchell, SD to be close to his son, Benny Ray and daughter in law Linda. He had added a new family member at this time, Oggy.

J W and Oggy loved Mitchell and being close this his family. He spent many hours with his son Benny and daughter in law Linda, along the James River fishing. He and his beloved companion of 14 years; Oggy, a German shepherd, spent many hours riding around town visiting friends.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Barb; sister, Virginia; children, Barbara Anne, and Jay and survived by his children Benny Ray, Debbie, Terry, Chris, Scott; sister, Vanita; and grand/great grandchildren too numerous to count. J W will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
