I-90 to open between Wall and Chamberlain
PIERRE, S.D. - Effective at 10:45 a.m. (CST) on Thursday, Jan. 7, Interstate 90 will re-open between Wall and Chamberlain.
I-90 remains closed between Chamberlain and Sioux Falls. The strong winds and heavy drifting that stopped travel in western South Dakota on Wednesday continues through the eastern half of the state Thursday.
Those conditions make it unlikely that additional sections of I-90 will re-open until late afternoon or early evening.
Officials remind motorists that as stretches of highway are re-opened, winter driving conditions will exist, including some snowpacked and slippery areas and perhaps some drifting snow. Motorists should also use caution around emergency vehicles and in areas where recovery operations are still in progress.
Officials with the state Departments of Transportation and Public Safety will continue to assess road and weather conditions to determine when other segments of interstate could be re-opened.
