Email News Alerts

PIERRE, S.D. - Effective at 4 p.m. (CST) on Thursday, Jan. 7, Interstate 90 will re-open between Chamberlain and Mitchell.

I-90 remains closed between Mitchell and Sioux Falls. State Transportation and Public Safety officials caution that travel will be hazardous, especially after dark. Winter driving conditions will exist, including snow-packed and slippery areas, blowing and drifting snow and limited visibility.

Officials say travel conditions through the night will be treacherous, and motorists can expect to encounter significant drifting and partial blockages in some areas. The temperature is expected to plummet through the night, creating dangerous wind chills and potentially life-threatening conditions for anyone stranded out in the open.

"We want people to know that while much of the interstate is open, travel will be extremely difficult,' said Col. Dan Mosteller, head of the South Dakota Highway Patrol. "In the recent Christmas blizzard and so far during this major storm, South Dakota citizens have used good judgment and common sense to stay safe and to keep their families safe.

We appreciate that and encourage citizens to continue to make safe choices.'

Travelers are reminded to carry a winter kit and a charged cell phone and to advise friends and family of their plans. Travelers are strongly encouraged to visit www.safetravelusa.com or call 511 to check the latest road conditions and travel advisories.
