Hurricanes win SEFSA league title
SIOUX FALLS -- The Mitchell Hurricanes U16 fastpitch softball team won the U18 and U16 titles at the Sioux Empire Fastpitch Softball Association league championships over the weekend in Sioux Falls.
The Hurricanes, the No. 6 seed, went 5-1 in six games. They started the tournament with a 4-2 win over the U18 Outlaws and an 8-1 win against the Blast. Mitchell lost 3-2 in extra innings to the U18 KMIT team, which was the No. 1 seed.
But the Hurricanes bounced back with an 8-0 win over the Velocity thanks to a two-run, in-the-park, walk-off home run by Courtney Moore.
The Hurricanes came up against KMIT again in the championship game and won 6-1 to force a second championship game, which the Hurricanes also won 3-1. Hailey Gukeisen had all three RBIs in the second championship game.
Macie Harris made all three outs in center field to end the second championship game and give the Hurricanes the win.
Cassie Kayser went 4-0 on the mound for the Hurricanes. She threw 24 innings and gave up four runs on 19 hits. Andrea Sheppard-Kauwalu went 1-1 and threw all 13 innings against KMIT. She gave up four runs on 12 hits.
Sheppard-Kauwalu had eight hits, including three doubles and two triples, to lead the Hurricanes. Katy Lazenby had six hits and seven stolen bases, Kayser, Mikala Krcil, Kaleigh Rolle and Courtney Moore all had five hits and combined for 11 RBIs and Gukeisen had four hits with eight RBIs.
Members of the Hurricanes are Gukeisen, Rolle, Sheppard-Kauwalu, Harris, Kayser, Lazenby, Shelby Gunsch, Kelsey Weber, Moore, Lexi Pletten, Lindsey Hoffman and Krcil.
