Howard man named to veterans’ rural health committee
HOWARD — Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki has appointed John Mengenhausen, a U.S. Army, 172nd Airborne Infantry Brigade veteran and CEO of Horizon Health Care Inc., to the VA’s Veterans’ Rural Health Advisory Committee.
Created in 2008, VRHAC advises the secretary on health care issues affecting rural veterans who are enrolled in the VA health care system.
As a member of VRHAC, Mengenhausen and the 15-member committee, nationwide, will examine ways to improve health care services for veterans residing in rural areas through a combination of community based clinic expansion, increased partnership with non-VA rural providers, and increased use of telemedicine and information technology.
Following a three-year tour with an Army airborne company, Mengenhausen received his degree in business and accounting from Nettleton College in Sioux Falls.
After receiving his degree, he returned to his hometown of Howard and opened a small accounting and tax preparation firm.
In October 1983, he assumed the role of CEO of what is today Horizon Health Care Inc.
He is the president of Howard’s local development organization, Howard Industries, and is currently serving as the fire chief of the Howard Volunteer Fire Department.
