Howard man earns national honor
HOWARD -- The National Association of Community Health Centers has presented John Mengenhausen, chief executive officer of Horizon Health Care Inc. in Howard, with the 2013 John Gilbert Award.
The award, which recognizes longstanding excellence and leadership in community health, was presented to Mengenhausen at the 44th annual NACHC Community Health Institute in Chicago, a national conference attended by nearly 2,000 community health leaders from across the country.
"Horizon is no ordinary rural health center," said Gary Wiltz, MD, NACHC's board chair, during the award ceremony. "Walk through their doors and you see patient centered medical care at its most modern -- with electronic medical records for quality assurance and high definition video conferencing at every location.
"There is also telemedicine equipment that helps patients access specialty care services, no matter where they live. They are cutting edge and hard wired for the future. The energetic force behind that achievement is Horizon's CEO John Mengenhausen. With 20 years of experience as a health care administrator, John is respected at the state, regional and national levels. He brings to the health center mission an uncanny sense of what will matter in health care beyond today."
Mengenhausen is a longtime and active member of NACHC, where he has served as the Board Chair and a leading advocacy voice for health centers. He has served as the CEO of Horizon since 1983.
