House approves hunting lions with dogs

PIERRE -- Mountain lion hunters would be allowed to use dogs year-round outside the Black Hills under a measure that won approval Wednesday in the state House of Representatives.

The vote was 48-22 for HB 1068 sponsored by Rep. Betty Olson, R-Prairie City.

The measure also recognizes that the state Game, Fish and Parks Commission can set lion-hunting regulations regarding dogs within the Black Hills Fire Protection District.

The legislation now heads to the Senate for a committee hearing there.

It was on the House consent calendar Tuesday for approval without debate because it didn't have any opposition at its House committee.

But Rep. Nancy Rasmussen, R-Hurley, asked that it be placed on the debate calendar instead.

"Some of you have been deluged with emails from across the nation," Olson said Wednesday.

No one spoke against her.
