Hot day sets temperature record in city
Mitchell broke a record Wednesday with a high temperature of 103 degrees.
The city's previous high for Aug. 29 was 100 degrees in 1961.
Unofficially, temperatures climbed to 112 degrees in Chamberlain and Winner on Wednesday. Information on records in those cities was not immediately available from the National Weather Service.
Jim Murray, a meteorologist with the NWS in Sioux Falls, said Mitchell's heat will moderate a bit today.
"Mitchell will be slightly cooler -- and I use that term loosely," he said, as a new front will bring in slightly cooler air, but temps will still exceed seasonal averages.
Today's Mitchell forecast is mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 96 and south-southwest winds of 5 to 10 mph becoming light and variable.
