Q: What is the coldest recorded temperature in Mitchell’s history?

A: According to Kyle Weisser, of the National Weather Service office in Sioux Falls, Mitchell temperature data has been recorded since 1896. Mitchell’s coldest temperature on record is 40 degrees below zero, which occurred Feb. 19, 1994.

Mitchell has experienced 39 below zero twice, on Feb. 2, 1905, and Feb. 11, 1899; and 38 below zero twice, on Jan. 19, 1970, and Feb. 9, 1899.
