GLAD YOU ASKED: South Dakota's 125th

Q. What is the city of Mitchell is doing for South Dakota's 125th Anniversary celebration? Is there a committee? How can I volunteer?

A. According to Neil Putnam, a member of the committee tasked with planning the city's celebration, said in an interview Friday a celebration is being planned for Sept. 9 at Horseman's Sports Arena, a day after the 125th Statehood Anniversary Wagon Train is scheduled to arrive in Mitchell. Details of the event have yet to be finalized, but Putnam said there will likely be speakers and other forms of entertainment, and possibly some activities for kids.

Since the plans have not yet been finalized, it's unclear whether volunteers will be needed for the event, Putnam said. Once the plan is set, it's possible volunteers will be needed, Putnam said, and arrangements would be made at that time.

The wagon train began at the Dakota Territorial capital of Yankton on Sept. 3 and is scheduled arrive in Pierre on Sept. 20, after completing a 250-mile trip.
