Gertrude "Gertie" Van Pelt

Gertrude "Gertie" Florence (Welchert) Van Pelt, age 85, of Howard, SD, died at Madison Community Hospital on December 24, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, December 30 at St Agathas Catholic Church, Howard, SD. Visitation will be 2:00 PM 4:00 PM with Prayer Service at 3:00 PM on Sunday, December 29 at Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell, SD. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, Fulton, SD

Gertie was born to Henry and Mary (Marx) Welchert on April 15, 1928, in Hartford, SD. She grew up; in the Salem area and attended school at Salem St Marys and high school in Burbank where she enjoyed playing basketball.

Gertie attended nursing training at Presentation College in Aberdeen and one of her greatest joys in life was teaching nursing students.

Gertie was united in marriage to Clifford Karl Van Pelt on Aril 12, 1951. Karl and Gertie lived in Oceanside, CA, while Karl was in Marine Corp Basic Training before being deployed to the Korean Conflict. After returning to SD, they raised 12 children and farmed for over 45 years.

Gertie had a variety of jobs in her nursing career including head nurse, floor supervisor and night nurse at St Josephs Hospital in Mitchell, Miner County School Nurse, and was a nurse to anyone who needed one. Gertie also held a variety of other jobs over the years including advertising manager and writing for local newspapers; perming, setting, and cutting hair; growing and keeping records on various vegetable test plots; sewing clothes; and doing alterations Gerties last job, which she probably enjoyed the very most was working in the Activities Department at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Howard, SD. Gertie retired from the Nursing Home at the age of 83, but continued to volunteer her time writing their newsletter and leading worship services.

Gertie filled any free time she had by playing cards, writing poetry, crocheting, embroidering, watching sports any sport, especially baseball, doing crossword puzzles, riding in the golf cart while her children golfed, and visiting. Gertie enjoyed life and everything and everybody that was a part of her life and everyone was a part of her life there were no "strangers" to Gertie she gave freely of her time, talents and love to everyone she knew.

Gertie is survived by her children: Tim (Linda), Mitchell; Jeffrey (Deb), Tripp; Bradley, Fedora; Kariena Eaglefeather (Wyatt), Bridgewater; Karyla Dahl, Spearfish; Toby, Sioux Falls; daughter-in-law Tina Van Pelt, Auburn, PA; Barron, Gillette, WY; Kathleen Halter (David), Brandon; Klarissa Van Pelt-Smith (Donald), Aspen, CO; Erick, Watertown; and Kalicia Hoffman (Chris), Colona, IL; sisters: Francis Mahoney, Theresa Fowler, Mary Welchert; twenty-five grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl; son, Nicholas; her parents and 6 brothers and 3 sisters.
