Friend de Coup takes second place
Mitchell High School's show choir competition season ended with three more awards on Saturday.
MHS Vocal Director Chris Miller said Friend de Coup won best vocals, best choreography and second place overall at the Westwood Jubilation show choir competition on Saturday in Sloan, Iowa.
Miller said MHS finished preliminaries and finals with the highest point total of the approximately 25 schools that competed, but the grand champion was determined by a panel of six judges, who gave a Sioux City group more first-place votes.
"It is still pretty impressive, albeit a little confusing," Miller said with a chuckle. "In past competitions it's been decided by points; that would have meant we would have won."
It was the last competition of the season for Friend de Coup, who host the Show Choir Classic Saturday at the Corn Palace. Miller said other teams will compete, but since Friend de Coup is hosting, theirs will be an exhibition (non-competitive) performance during the finals round, which starts at 6 p.m.
In honor of the 30th anniversary of show choir in Mitchell, Miller said about 70 alumni will return to the Corn Palace to perform, prior to MHS' performance. He said singers, dancers and instrumentalists will form a full ensemble. As an MHS show choir alumnus, Miller said he is excited to have such a crowd of alumni returning to perform.
"For me just to be able to watch that will be a pretty cool experience," he said.
