DWU softball team to host girls' fastpitch tourney

There will be a girls' fastpitch softball tournament hosted by the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team July 6-7 at Cadwell Park.

The money raised will go toward the DWU softball program.

The tournament is open to age groups 10u to 18u in Class B and below. Registration deadline is June 28. The cost is $180 per team and each team must provide two game balls at check-in.

Each team is guaranteed three games, and pool play will determine team seeding into bracket play.

Mitchell Athletic Booster Club to meet Monday

The Mitchell Athletic Booster Club is scheduled to meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Mitchell High School library.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

San Diego Padres hosting two tryout baseball camps

The San Diego Padres Major League baseball team is hosting two tryout camps in June.

The first camp is Wednesday in Akron, Iowa. It starts at 9 a.m. at Sargent Field in the city park. Players should be ages 15-20 and must provide their own gloves, shoes and uniforms.

There will be other scouts and college coaches in attendance.

The second camp is held June 26 in Clear Lake. It will be held at 9 a.m. in city park.

Longtime SD Mines women's hoops coach done

RAPID CITY (AP) -- The longtime women's basketball coach at the South Dakota School of Mines will not return next season.

The Rapid City school issued a statement saying school officials and Barb Felderman mutually agreed not to renew her contract.

Felderman has been the Lady Hardrockers coach for 32 years. She says, "I have lived my dreams."

Felderman compiled a 474-397 record. She led teams to 11 conference championships and nine appearances in the NAIA tournament, including Final Four appearances in 1998 and 1999.

The gymnasium floor in the school's King Center is being named in her honor.

Tony Stewart to race at dirt track in South Dakota

BRANDON (AP) -- Three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart is scheduled to race at Huset's Speedway near Brandon on July 3.

Stewart will race a sprint car in a World of Outlaws event. It will be the first time he has raced a sprint car in South Dakota.

Stewart started his career on dirt tracks in Indiana. He now makes select appearances at dirt tracks in addition to his NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule. He has raced at the track in West Fargo, N.D., several times in the past few years.
