Snack Pack the Palace event set for DWU game

The Weekend Snack Pack Program, in conjunction with Dakota Wesleyan University, is asking sports fans to Snack Pack the Palace at Wednesday’s Tiger basketball game.

DWU’s Enactus club is organizing an awareness event for the Weekend Snack Pack Program during the DWU vs. Mount Marty game Wednesday at the Corn Palace. A portion of the gate admission, as well as the proceeds of a 50/50 raffle, will go toward the Weekend Snack Pack program, and monetary and food donations are welcome at the donation booth in the Palace.

The women’s game begins at 6 p.m. and the men’s at 8 p.m. The crowd is encouraged to participate in a white-out event and the men’s game will be a “Silent Night” game, which is when the crow is asked to be completely silent until DWU scores its 10th point.

LifeQuest Lawn Bowling League event a success

For the third year, the LifeQuest Lawn Bowling League was a success and participants were honored at an awards event Sunday.

Medals were awarded to the top three bowlers in each of three divisions. In singles, Dennis Determan won, followed by Patty Archambeau and Doug Cross. In pairs, Jenny Kunkel and Brad Vobr tied for first and Jeremy McKee took second. In three-some singles, Kristi Arnold was first, Kaylynn Wee was second and Terry Houdek was third.

The overall award went to Alicia Calvert.

5 MAC swimmers headed to Midwest All-Stars meet

Five Mitchell Aquatic Club swimmers are headed to the Midwest All-Stars meet Saturday in Lawrence, Kan.

Cailey Scott, Ethan Huber, Brynn Palmer, Max Alexander and Jakob Studer are all set to compete for Team South Dakota. The swimmers will compete against athletes from Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri.

In order to qualify, each MAC swimmer had to be in the top 5 of an event in their respective age group from South Dakota.

SDSU closes out IUPUI, 86-70

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jordan Dykstra scored 26 points and Cody Larson added another 22 as South Dakota State opened Summit League play with an 86-70 win over Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis (5-13, 0-1 Summit) Thursday night.

Khufu Najee drilled a 3-pointer with 3:14 left to play to cut the SDSU (9-7, 1-0 Summit) lead to three, 73-70, but Dykstra answered with a layup with 2:55 left and was fouled by Donovan Gibbs with a technical foul tacked on. Dykstra stroked all three free throws to make it an eight-point lead and sparking a 13-0 run to close out the game.

SDSU women top IUPUI 63-57

BROOKINGS — The South Dakota State University women beat Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis 63-57 in a Summit League contest Thursday at Frost Arena.

Senior guard Tara Heiser led the way for SDSU with 11 points. Nine of the 10 Jackrabbits who played Thursday scored.

Junior forward Megan Waytashek and junior guard Gabby Boever each had nine points four SDSU. Mitchell native and freshman guard Kerri Young scored four points and one assists for the Jackrabbits, who shot 22-of-57 from the field.

IUPUI was led by senior guard DeAirra Goss, who scored 21 points. Sophomore forward Akilah Simms added 12 points and six rebounds for IUPUI.

SDSU (10-7, 1-0 Summit) hosts Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne at 4 p.m. Saturday at Frost Arena.
