Four individuals, one boys team announced to MHS Athletic HOF
Four individuals and one boys team were announced Wednesday at the Mitchell High School Athletic Banquet as the inductees for the Class of 2014 MHS Athletic Booster Club Hall of Fame.
Don Barnes, class of 1936; Ken Koup, class of 1949; Jane Buche, class of 1976; Tim Byrd, class of 1985; and the 1986 football team will be inducted in October as part of homecoming week.
Barnes was a football, basketball and track and field athlete and went on to play basketball and football at Creighton University. Koup also played football, basketball and competed in track and field. After high school, he played basketball for Colorado University and coached in the military, collegiate and youth levels at various locations around the country.
Buche competed on the basketball court and in track and field. She had the state long jump record at the time of her high school graduation. She went on to play basketball at Black Hills State University.
Byrd was a member of the football, basketball and track and field teams at Mitchell and went on to play football for the University of South Dakota. In high school, he was an all-state basketball and football player.
The 1986 Mitchell football team was the school’s first football squad to make the state championship game at the DakotaDome in Vermillion. The Kernels won the Eastern South Dakota Conference that season, ending with a 11-1 record.
