Four area teams open state teener tournament today
Four area teener teams open play today at the VFW 13-14B State Baseball Tournament in Clear Lake.
Colome, Platte, Kimball/White Lake and Canova will compete in hopes of winning a state title. Kimball/White Lake topped Canova in the Region 3B championship game, while Colome was crowned champion of Region 4B, beating Platte.
Kimball/White Lake coach Wesley Kroupa said he thinks this is the first year Kimball/White Lake has earned a state tournament berth at this division.
"We feel pretty confident and played well in the region," said Kroupa, whose team is 18-3 overall. "We don't really have any weaknesses and our ninth and 10th guys are as good as our first."
Kimball/White Lake has seven pitchers who can throw strikes consistently, said Kroupa. Seth Kirsch, Dylan Mohnen and Josh Taylor have led the team on the mound this season.
Kirsch and Taylor are also batting above .400 this year.
Kimball/White Lake opens up against Platte at 6 p.m. today in a first-round game. Platte has an overall record of 14-8 this season.
The Daily Republic unsuccessfully attempted to reach coaches from Colome, Platte and Canova for report.
Colome plays Garretson at 2:30 p.m. today, and Canova matches up against Clear Lake at 8:15 p.m. today. Webster and Flandreau round out the eight teams.
