Former USD student sues fraternity, alleging hazing
VERMILLION (AP) -- A former University of South Dakota Student is suing a fraternity and several members, saying he was injured in a 2010 hazing incident.
The Argus Leader reports that Matthew Cronan said in court documents that he was encouraged to drink excess amounts of alcohol in preparation for a pledge skit in February 2010 held at Sigma Nu in Vermillion. He says a resulting head injury prevented him from completing his second semester.
The lawsuit states Cronan's traumatic brain injuries resulted in surgery and a lengthy hospitalization. Cronan is seeking damages in excess of $300,000.
USD's student-run newspaper The Volante reported that the Sigma Nu chapter closed in December because of a perpetual lack of finances and recruitment.
A message left with the national chapter's executive director was not immediately returned.
