Former USD football coach, AD 'Beanie' Cooper dies
VERMILLION (AP) — A man who started his football coaching career at the high school level in Iowa before going to the University of South Dakota has died.
Larkin Funeral Homes in Sioux City, Iowa, says Bernard "Beanie" Cooper died Sunday at age 86.
South Dakota Public Broadcasting reports Cooper had a 43-11 record at Heelan High School in Sioux City before going to USD in 1975.
He coached the 1978 Coyotes to the school's first North Central Conference championship in 27 years.
Cooper stepped down after that season to serve full time as athletic director before serving in that capacity at Indiana State University.
Cooper entered USD's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.
