PIERRE (AP) — Airport officials in Pierre say they've seen fewer cancellations in the number of commercial air flights in the past month.

Pierre Regional Airport Manager Mike Issacs tells KCCR radio that 33 of 196 flights — or 17 percent — were canceled in February. That's down from 25 percent in January.

Isaacs says that's still higher than what is accepted by the FAA, but it's getting better.

The city's commercial service with daily flights to Denver and Minneapolis is provided by Great Lakes Airlines. Canceled flights have been a concern for city officials since late last year.

Great Lakes executives have said the reason for the cancellations is new FAA rules that require more flying hours for pilots. When the company's pilots don't have enough hours, flights have to be cancelled.
