Fitts, DWU women claim titles; men take fourth at Palace City Classic
Lauren Fitts topped Tiger teammate Chelsea Burback in a playoff to take first in the Palace City Classic Saturday in Mitchell at the Wild Oaks Golf Club.
Dakota Wesleyan University won the team title as well, with three Tigers finishing in the top four.
“When you have the two best players in the tournament it is hard not to win,” DWU coach Adam Anderson said . “It’s a great feeling as a coach to know that your two best players are better than everyone else in the field.”
The Tigers lapped the completion, shooting a 641 as a team. Next closest was Northwestern College at 673.
Fitts and Burback each carded a 157 in their first 36 holes. Talia Peters added to the Tiger success finishing fourth with a 161.
Anderson knew it was important to get a win with the tournament being played on the home course.
“It’s like having a home-court advantage in a lot of other sports,” Anderson said. “It lends towards placing better that the schools that aren’t familiar with the course.”
The DWU men finished fourth over the weekend, carding a fall best 592. Hastings took first with a 580.
The Tigers were paced by Tyler Burr, who finished sixth in the tournament with a 145, while Austin Heib tied for ninth with 148.
The Tiger women complete their fall season with the second GPAC qualifier Wednesday at Whispering Creek in Sioux City, Iowa.
The men play Viterbo University starting Wednesday at La Crosse golf course in Onalaska, Wis.
