Fire in Douglas County burns up baler
DELMONT — A baler caught fire Saturday night in rural Douglas County, but no injuries came from the fire, which was contained to a few acres of grass.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Saturday on 402nd Avenue (Betts Road), one mile south of the intersection of State Highway 44 and about seven miles north of Delmont in Lincoln Township.
The fire seemed to start as a farmer was attempting to bale some stubble in a field, Delmont Fire Chief Elmer Goehring said. He said the tractor's driver as unaware of the fire until he left the field. The driver stopped, unhooked the tractor from the baler and called 911.
When the Delmont Fire Department arrived, crews split up into two units, with one taking the grass fire and the other group extinguishing the baler fire, Goehring said.
The baler is considered to be a total loss.
