Fire destroys trailer, contents on Interstate 90
A Wisconsin woman lost her trailer and all of its contents to a fire Wednesday while driving on Interstate 90.
Nicole Lockwood, 34, was driving west on I-90 when a tire blew out on her enclosed trailer. She didn't realize she lost the tire for several miles, said Hanson County Deputy Sheriff Casey Tegethoff. The trailer dragged on the road and sparked separate small grass fires from exit 357 to 342. The inside of the trailer also started on fire while it was dragging on the road.
"She said she didn't feel any change in the pull of the trailer," Tegethoff said.
Lockwood was driving a Dodge Ram 2500 diesel truck and eventually noticed the trailer was cockeyed when she looked in her rearview mirror. She stopped to see what was wrong, and then saw the trailer was on fire, Tegethoff said.
Lockwood was on her way to Sturgis for the motorcycle rally, where she was going to sell leather seal, he added.
Alexandria Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. Tom's Auto from Alexandria towed the trailer, which is a complete loss, Tegethoff said.
Davison County Sheriff's Office also responded to the scene. Emery and Spencer fire departments were also dispatched to extinguish the grass fires.
Tegethoff did not cite Lockwood.
