FFA members participate in leadership career development

The South Dakota FFA Association hosted 512 FFA members from across South Dakota on Dec. 8-9, in Pierre at the 2013 State FFA Leadership Career Development events.

Winning teams and individuals will advance to compete in their Career Development event at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Ky., next fall.

These area students/teams placed in the following competitions:

Prepared Public Speaking, (6 to 8 minute prepared ag oriented speech and answers five minutes of related questions): Silver: Cooper Eliason, Howard; Kaley Nolz, Mitchell; Bronze: Logan Hoffman, Bridgewater-Emery.

Extemporaneous Public Speaking: (4 to 6 minutes unrehearsed speech written and presented onsite): Gold: Shelby Riggs, Mitchell; Bronze: Andrew Streff, McCook Central.

Job Interview: (complete job application, write letter of application, do job interview and write follow-up letter.) Bronze: Lisa Smith, Kimball.

Ag Sales: (team members develop strategy for selling pre-determined products to specific customers). Individual awards: Silver: Jim Ellsworth, Chamberlain; Brandon Houska, Chamberlain; Bronze: Adam Eichacker, McCook. Teams: Silver, Mitchell.

Junior Conduct of Meetings: (Freshmen present a mock FFA meeting). Gold: McCook Central

Marketing Plan: (determine need, and create strategy for marketing a new ag product or company to fill need). Silver: Mitchell; Bronze: McCook Central.

Ag Issues: (3 to 7 member team discuss pros and cons of major ag issue facing their area). Bronze: Howard (tie with Viborg-Hurley)

Ag Broadcasting/Journalism: (students have 30 minutes to prepare five minute ag radio newscast and “air” it). Silver: Jenna Skinner.

Ag Communications: (teams play role of communications consultants to develop and present a media plan for an assigned scenario). Silver: McCook Central.
