Federal money eyed for Mitchell's Spruce Street
The Davison County Commission took the first step Tuesday to change the designation for part of East Spruce Street in Mitchell, with the goal of using federal money for upgrades in the future.
The change would make the one mile stretch of Spruce Street east of State Highway 37 into an urban collector, as opposed to an urban local road. That change in designation would allow the city of Mitchell and the county to pursue federal money to fix or maintain that stretch of road.
Collectors are defined by the Federal Highway Administration as being major and minor roads that connect local roads and streets with larger arterial highways with speed limits between 35 and 55 mph. In this case, Spruce Street connects with State Highway 37, an arterial highway.
The Mitchell City Council approved the urban boundaries at its May 5 meeting.
There are more hurdles of approval needed to make the change official, including a resolution that will come before the commission in June for reclassification. Davison County Highway Superintendent Rusty Weinberg said the city of Mitchell is responsible for maintaining the street and that would not be altered with the classification change.
