MOUNT VERNON -- A father and son each face charges after crashing their car into a pond Wednesday morning south of Mount Vernon, authorities say.

Shortly after 7:30 a.m., a passerby reported a 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo submerged in a pond about four miles south of Mount Vernon on 397th Avenue, according to Davison County Chief Deputy Steve Harr.

Jeffrey McGhee Sr., 40, and Jeffrey McGhee Jr., 19, both of Mitchell, were in the vehicle at the time of the crash, Harr said, and both were uninjured and able to climb out of the car on their own. The exact cause of the crash remains unclear.

"It looks like they just plain drove off the road," Harr said.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash, Harr added.

McGhee Sr. and McGhee Jr. allegedly did not report the crash to authorities and instead left the vehicle behind and walked south on 397th Avenue, according to Harr. The two men had stopped at a nearby farmhouse to call a tow truck when law enforcement arrived.

Authorities are unsure which McGhee was driving at the time of the crash, Harr said.

"We're not getting any cooperation out of either one of them," he said.

McGhee Sr. is charged with failure to report an accident, a misdemeanor. He was taken into custody for violating a condition of his bond from an April 23 arrest for aggravated assault that required him to have no contact with his son, and for violating the 24/7 Sobriety program.

McGhee Jr. is charged underage possession of alcohol and, as of Wednesday afternoon, was in custody on a detox hold.

Authorities were able to extract the car from the pond later Wednesday morning.
