Evelyn Elda Davis, age 92, of Mitchell, SD died Thursday, May 8, 2014 at her home. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, May 15, 2014 at First Lutheran Church with burial at Servicemens Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the Will Funeral Chapel.
Evelyn Davis, daughter of Arthur and Viola (Selle) Huwe, was born in Rural Day County, SD on October 31, 1921. She grew up on a farm near Lily, SD and attended country school. Evelyn graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls in 1944. She taught school in Garden City, SD where she met her future husband, Wilton Davis. The couple was married on May 6, 1945 in Lily, SD. They made their home in Mitchell, SD in 1948. While in Mitchell, Evelyn was a homemaker and raised their children. When their children stared school, she began working at Newberrys Department Store and later at Barneys Market. In their retirement the couple enjoyed traveling and genealogy.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church for over 50 years, where she was involved in church circle and bible study. Evelyn was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading, crosswords, quilting, genealogy and gardening. She also had the opportunity to write a book about her father and her family history.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Craig (Sarah) Davis, Sioux Falls, SD, Laurie Ell, Mitchell, SD, Mark (Tammy) Davis, Mitchell, SD, Dana Davis, Mitchell, SD; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a brother, Orlyn (Rita) Huwe, Rockford, IL; a sister, Marvel Ring, Nisswa, MN; two sisters-in-law, Carol Huwe, Overland Park, KS, Gail Huwe, Edina, MN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilton; two daughters, Karen Novotny and Sheree Onchwari; a son, Stephen Davis; a grandson, Matthew Boje and a great granddaughter, Nicole Boje-King; three brothers, Lowell, Harold and Myron.
