Eugene M. Garry
Parkston Eugene M. Garry, 79, died Tuesday, October 29 at the Tripp Good Samaritan Center in Tripp. Funeral mass will be Saturday, November 2 at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston. Visitation will be Friday, November 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm with a 7:30 pm prayer service at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Parkston. Arrangements by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston.
Gene was born December 7, 1933 to Joe and Wilma Garry in Bridgewater, SD. He graduated from Montrose High School in 1952. He served in the United States Army from 1954 until his discharge in 1956. He was united in marriage to Irene Hoffman on July 30, 1955 in Glendale, CA. He graduated from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion in 1960. He taught high school and coached in Humboldt from 1960 to 1963 and Tripp from 1963 to 1967. In 1967, he moved to Parkston where he taught, coached and was athletic director until retiring in 1989. Gene was a charter member of the South Dakota High School Athletic Directors Association and was association president in 1977. In 1989, he became a crop insurance adjuster with the Hartford Insurance Company. While teaching in Parkston, he was named teacher of the year in 1972-'73 and 1973-'74. He was also named to the South Dakota High School Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame and SESD and LMVC Conference Hall of Fames.
He is survived by his 3 sons: Bruce Garry of Parkston; Joe (Jan) Garry of Watertown; and Mark (Teresa) Garry of Harzard, KY; 4 grandchildren: Jamie, Bret, Heather and Joshua; 5 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Denny (Penny) Garry of Garretson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irene; and a son, Anthony.
