Eugene "Gene" Chytka

64 yr old Gene Chytka of Burke, SD finally got his wish. He went to the biggest hunting ground in Heaven on August 29th, 2013 at the Doughtery Hospice House in Sioux Falls SD.

When the weather was bad his dad would take Gene and his sister Naomi by team and wagon and drive five miles to school. The family then moved north of Bonesteel where Gene attended school. He graduated from Bonesteel High School in 1967 and attended SDSU for 2 yrs. On May 22, 1970 he married Susan Lynn Peterson in Burke, SD. To this union his legacy was born Sara Lynn, Casey Louis and Lee Frank. He worked for P&P Farms & Seger Farms in Atkinson, NE.

In 1983 they moved to Burke, SD to Sue’s folks place where her grandmother homesteaded. In 2003 they moved ½ mile east to where they presently live. He was a farmer, rancher and loved taking care of his cattle. He was employed by the Burke Livestock since 1997. He loved that job especially “shooting the bull” with the guys and giving the women a bad time. He also worked for the FSA as a field man. When they called for him to do a job, he would say, “I’d better shave, I’m going to see my girls.”

In 2005, Howling Hills Hunting was started. He met many strangers that he now calls friends. He loved when they would come and he could talk hunting for hours.

His main joy was his kids and grandkids. He was so very proud of them.

Gene fought a courageous battle with colorectal cancer. He was an inspiration and hero to many people. He had grit and determination that he was going to beat this “monster”, and he did for over 5 years.

Gene is survived by his wife, Sue of 43 years. His children Sara Frey (Mike), Casey Chytka (Laura), and Lee Chytka (Sara). His grandchildren Dylan and Colin Frey and Tyler Chytka.
