Emma Leona (Henke) Lehrkamp was born February 27, 1924 to John and Louise (Uttecht) Henke on the family farm southeast of Parkston, SD. She was the youngest of eight children and was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston. She graduated from Parkston High School in 1942 and then worked at St. Benedict Hospital, the Parkston Bakery, and Renfro Variety. On June 22, 1947 she married Norbert A. Lehrkamp at Salem Lutheran Church and then moved to the Lehrkamp family farm near Delmont, SD. To this union was born one daughter, Patricia Ann. Emma became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Delmont and served as a Sunday School teacher for many years, in addition to serving on many committees. Being a farm wife, loving mother, and homemaker were Emma's great joys in life. In the early years she enjoyed gardening and canning, cooking and baking, especially bread and kuchen. She also loved doing crafts, knitting, and crocheting, making many afghans for family members and friends. She served as a leader of the Go Getters 4-H Club of Douglas County for ten years, and was also a member of the Prairie People Handicraft Club. Most recently she crocheted lap robes and prayer shawls for the Quilters Group of St. John's Lutheran Church of Yankton, SD, her daughter's church. The lap robes were distributed to local nursing home residents, church shut-ins, and the Orpahn Grain Train. Norbert and Emma resided on the family farm, even after retirement. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on June 22, 2011. Norbert went to be with his Lord on May 25, 2012. Emma went to her Heavenly home on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center in Tripp, SD at the age of 89.
