Parkston Elizabeth Kost, 99, died Sunday, September 1 at Avera St. Benedict Hospital in Parkston. Funeral service will be Friday, September 6 at 10:30 am at Salem United Church of Christ in Parkston. Visitation will be Thursday, September 5 from 6 to 8 pm with a 7:00 pm prayer service at Salem United Church of Christ in Parkston. Arrangements by Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in Parkston.
Elizabeth Kost was born November 2, 1913 to Henry and Helen (Ackerman) Schaefer on the family farm near Scotland, SD. She attended country school and Scotland High School through the 11th grade. She lived with her family for a short time before moving to Sioux City, Ia. She was united in marriage to Arnold Howes in Elk Point, SD. The couple moved to Arkansas where Elizabeth worked 14 years in a furniture factory and raised 3 children. She moved back to South Dakota and married Arnold Kost on July 17, 1955 in Parkston. The couple farmed near Parkston until moving into town in 1970. At that time Elizabeth began working as a nurses aid at the Good Samaritan Center in Parkston. She was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and Women's Fellowship. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, crocheting, bowling, fishing and playing cards and marbles with friends and neighbors.
She is survived by her four children: Donna Stainbrook of Parkston; Armin (Arlene) Kost of Parkston; Dennis (Carolyn) Kost of Rapid City, SD; and LaVonne (Jim) Lawton of Ackley, IA; 28 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; 2 sons, Ronald and Arnet Howes; a step-son, Donald Kost; 2 grandchildren; a brother; 3 step-brothers; a half sister and 2 daughters-in-law, Sharon and Dorothea.
